Foothills earns trip to state with win over MaranaArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.03.2007
For No. 2 Catalina Foothills, a sweep of No. 3 Marana in the 4A Sonoran tournament on Friday was just a warm-up.
"My focus is getting ready for state," Foothills coach A.J. Malis said. "Even though there are no power points on the line, having an off week is not an option."
The Falcons (18-16) allowed Marana (15-16) to come close throughout the match but still won all three 25-21, 25-22, 25-22.
"Marana is a tremendous team with some phenomenal athletes," Malis said.
In the first game, Foothills' Colleen Svancara put the ball over the net in an attempt to save the play but instead scored a point to break a 19-19 tie. The Falcons went on to score five of the last seven points.
"I'm not at all surprised it was close," Malis said. "At this time of the year, if (Marana) gets a win, then they move onto state."
Game 3 was tied at 20 when Brittany Honea's tip sent Foothills defenders scrambling. But the Falcons took a 23-22 lead when Satori Pyle blocked Honea.
Foothills clinched a spot in the state tournament with a hit from Ashley Anhalt to end the match.
4A Kino Region
Cienega is headed back to the state tournament. With 11 kills and nine digs from senior Elyse Naylor, the No. 2 Bobcats swept No. 4 Flowing Wells 25-15, 25-13, 25-19 to clinch an automatic bid into the first round.
"We came out with the intensity that we were going to come out slow like we normally do," Cienega senior Lyndsey Musgrove said. "But we came out with a big bang in Game 1, so that was exciting for us."
The Caballeros (18-21) were also shut out for the first eight points of Game 3.
But an ace from Lindsay King and a hitting error from the Bobcats (23-13) later cut the lead to 16-12.
4A Gila Region
Third seeded Catalina (24-6) is on to the championship match after beating No. 2 Sahuarita 25-10, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16.
With the fourth game tied at 16, a Sahuarita (30-5) receiving error and attack error gave the Trojans the boost they needed. Catalina went on to nine unanswered points.
Catalina's Kelsee Rupp had a match-high 18 kills. She also contributed 13 digs, four aces and three blocks.
